Terra Cotta Warrior
The Terra Cotta Army was commissioned by the first emperor of China as a way of protecting him in the afterlife. Each warrior in this massive army was constructed from terra cotta (a red-brown clay, baked into a ceramic form), by Artisans and Mages in the city of Xi’an. Each warrior was enchanted by a modified version of the animate objects spell to give it sustained mobility into the afterlife as it followed its one and only directive: to protect and serve the emperor.
Functioning Prototypes. The vast majority of the Terra Cotta Army has been buried in the necropolis in Xi’an, where it lies dormant awaiting an unknown contingency which will cause the army to spring to life. In the meantime, visitors to the city of Xi’an or Luoyang might encounter some functioning prototypes of Terra Cotta Warriors patrolling the streets. These warriors are not part of the “official” Terra Cotta Army, but were creating as an early proof of concept during the planning phase of the necropolis. These prototypes now serve as reliable law enforcement under emperor Guangwu, due to the fact that they cannot be bribed or persuaded from their prime directive: to serve the emperor.
