Summon Shade

Source:Unearthed ApocryphaThis content is unofficial and is currently being playtested.

Unearthed Apocrypha #2: Outlaws and Ossuaries, pp. 5–6.

Level 1 Divination (Cleric, Warlock)

Casting Time: 1 minute or Ritual

Range: Touch

Component: V, S, M (a possession or heirloom from a deceased creature)

Duration: 1 minute

You touch a possession that was cherished by a deceased creature during its life throughout the casting. When the casting is complete, the shade of this creature is temporarily summoned from Sheol, hovering before you as a spectral, intangible mote of gray light. The Shade remains for the Duration.

As an action on each of your turns, you or one of your allies may ask the shade a question, which must pertain to the memories of the specific creature summoned. Each time a question is asked of the shade, the inquiring creature must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC. On a success, the shade is able to recover fragments of its memories, relaying a truthful answer to the inquirer by filling its mind with images, emotions, and desires, but not words. The strain of trying to recover these lost memories is perilous for a shade, and could lead to further consequences.

Consequences of Failure. You may ask the shade a number of questions up to your Proficiency Bonus, making a new Wisdom saving throw for each question. If you exceed this number, if any Wisdom saving throw fails, or if you do not dismiss the shade before the Duration of the spell ends, the shade becomes corrupted by the strain of trying to recover its identity and transforms into an Undead creature chosen by the GM. The Undead has a CR equal to your character level, and is hostile to you and your companions. The soul of the creature targeted in the casting is imprisoned inside of this new form and is unable to reach eternal rest until its Undead form is destroyed, and which point the imprisoned soul returns to Sheol.

Other Consequences. This spell is outlawed by the Rephaim, and casting it within 1 mile of any Rephaim alerts it to your location.
