Scroll of the Seven Seals

Scroll of the Seven Seals

Scroll, Artifact (Requires attunement by a creature that fulfills the prophecy)

“Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?”

-Revelation 5:2

This scroll is magically sealed by seven seals, which cannot be opened except by a creature that fulfills the specific prophetic requirements:

“Only he who has humbled himself to share in our humanity, who has become sin, who has suffered, died, and was buried, and then rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures.

Only he may open the scroll and read its contents.”

If a creature meeting the requirements of the prophecy attunes to the Scroll of the Seven Seals, they gain innate control over it, and can break open a seal as an action, even if the scroll is not in their possession, or is on another Plane of existence. The scroll has seven seals, each has a different property.

Breaking the Seals. The seven seals must be broken in order, and each has a different effect.

1. The Horseman of Conquest is released. The wielder of the scroll may issue one telepathic command to the Horseman, which the Horseman is compelled to follow. After that, the Horseman acts on its own will. 2. The Horseman of War is released. The wielder of the scroll may issue one telepathic command to the Horseman, which the Horseman is compelled to follow. After that, the Horseman acts on its own will. 3. The Horseman of Famine is released. The wielder of the scroll may issue one telepathic command to the Horseman, which the Horseman is compelled to follow. After that, the Horseman acts on its own will. 4. The Horseman of Death is released. The wielder of the scroll may issue one telepathic command to the Horseman, which the Horseman is compelled to follow. After that, the Horseman acts on its own will. 5. The barrier between the Physical Realm and the Veil becomes thin, allowing the martyrs a brief moment to appear in spectral form and deliver a message. 6. The universe is subjected to the effects of the darkness spell (infinite range), for a half hour. 7. The universe is subjected to the effects of the silence spell (infinite range) for a half hour and then the earthquake spell (infinite range).

Restoring the Seals. Once broken, the seals are incredibly difficult to restore. The seals may be restored in any order, and a creature does not need to be attuned to the scroll to repair a seal. Seals 5-7 may be restored by using an action to expend a spell slot of a level equal to the number of the seal (for example, restoring the seventh seal requires a 7th level spell slot to be expended). Restoring seals 1-4 is substantially more difficult, as the Horsemen are not likely to be bound willingly. However if a Horseman is reduced to 0 hit points within 60 feet of the scroll, their essence is returned to it, as though by the imprisonment spell, and their corresponding seal is restored. Alternatively, a Horseman can be bound by casting the imprisonment spell (using the seal as the material component) or, (in rare circumstances) a Horseman can even choose to be bound to the scroll willingly.
